Sulfatase family S4
Family S4 is the
smallest family of sulfatases. Only one enzyme has been characterized
in this family, the aryl-sulfatase AtsA from the marine bacterium
Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora
(Barbeyron et al., 1995). Family S4 sulfatases display conserved
residues (notably the signature (T/S)HxHxD) which form the catalytic
zinc-binding sites found in glyoxalases II and
metallo-beta-lactamases (Carfi et al, 1995, Melino et al., 1998).
Thus, both families S3 and S4 belong to the metallo-beta-lactamase
superfamily, although the sequence similarity between the two
families of sulfatases is essentially limited to the zinc-binding
motifs.
